How I became a Marilyn Monroe Impersonator

January 4, 2018 | Babsy Artner
How it all began
Babsy Artner as Marilyn Monroe One day, when I was little, I said to my parents very confidently, “When I grow up, I will be a film actress!” I don’t think they took me very seriously, but it’s a fact that I never changed my mind ever since. I've always been passionate about movies, acting, film stars and Hollywood. Also, I’ve always really liked the 1950s and 1960s.
Marilyn Monroe Quote
After finishing school, I studied acting and eventually became an actress. I have rarely worked as a classical stage actress though, I’ve completely concentrated on a career in films. The following quote best reflects my feelings and thoughts.
“I used to think as I looked out on the Hollywood night, ‘There must be thousands of girls sitting alone like me, dreaming of becoming a movie star.
But I'm not going to worry about them.
I'm dreaming the hardest.’ ”

Becoming Marilyn
At the age of 13 my special talent was discovered by a teacher. I was singing and fooling around with a few other kids at school when suddenly an amazed teacher said, “You sound and look like Marilyn Monroe!” I just thought, “Who is Marilyn Monroe?”
This was the magic moment that would change my life. I was curious, so I tried to find out as much as possible about her. I’ve started to collect everything related to Marilyn: her movies and songs, photographs, biopics, documentaries, and books. Marilyn Monroe became one of the most important persons in my life. Being very ambitious I quickly learned how to move and perform like Marilyn. The same year I was discovered by a talent seeker named Walter Mohl. He was looking for children and teenagers for his talent contest “The little chance”. This was my first performance as Marilyn Monroe impersonator in front of an audience. I sang one or two songs and won the contest.

Babsy Artner as Marilyn Monroe Of course I didn’t really look like Marilyn at that time, my hair wasn’t blond and curly, and I was wearing glasses (on stage!). Today I’m laughing when I think back on this performance, it was just hilarious. It also makes me smile when I remember that I didn’t know who Marilyn Monroe was. However, I became more professional and started a career as a celebrity impersonator and look-alike. I’m lucky that I actually look like Marilyn (even my body height is almost the same), I just need a bit of makeup and hair rollers to make the style perfect. Apart from the external similarity I have also many other things in common with her. I’m extremely fond of animals, and just like Marilyn, I’ve always had to fight as an actress to get serious roles instead of the same stereotyped roles over and over again.

So one day I came up with the idea to produce a movie by myself, not a big budget feature film, but a short film. I'll tell you more about this project in another post. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you, please leave a comment. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you!
